The sun’s beating down on the pavement. You just finished mowing the lawn in Lubbock, and the heat radiating off the driveway feels like an oven. You walk inside, wipe the sweat off your forehead, and reach for a glass of water. You drink it down fast. But then you wonder: did I drink enough today?
We hear the same advice all the time. Drink eight glasses of water a day. Sounds simple, right? But living in West Texas during the peak of summer means those old rules don’t always apply. When the temperature climbs over 100 degrees, your body burns through water much faster than it does on a cool winter morning.
So how much water do you actually need? The answer isn’t a flat number. It changes based on who you are, what you’re doing, and how hard the Texas sun is working on any given day.
Why the Eight-Glass Rule Falls Short
The eight-glass rule is a decent starting point, but it assumes everyone’s the same size and lives in the same climate. A person working outside on a construction site in Amarillo needs significantly more water than someone sitting at a desk in an air-conditioned office in Abilene. Those are two completely different situations, and your body knows the difference.
Body weight plays a huge role. A simple way to figure out your personal baseline is to take your weight in pounds and divide it in half. That number is roughly how many ounces of water you need on a normal, easygoing day. If you weigh 160 pounds, you’re looking at about 80 ounces. Since a gallon is 128 ounces, that’s already more than half a gallon before you’ve stepped outside or done a single thing strenuous.
But we don’t live in a place with normal, easygoing weather. That’s just the reality of calling West Texas home.
The West Texas Heat Factor
When summer hits the Panhandle, the rules change fast. You lose water every time you sweat, and you also lose it just by breathing. The dry air pulls moisture right out of you. Spend any real time outdoors and you need to be replacing those fluids constantly, not just when you remember to.
Here’s the thing that catches a lot of people off guard: waiting until you feel thirsty is already too late. Thirst is your body sounding an alarm. By the time your mouth feels dry, you’re already mildly dehydrated. And dehydration doesn’t always announce itself dramatically. You might just feel a little tired in the afternoon. Maybe you get a dull headache that won’t go away. Sometimes you feel hungry when your body actually just needs a drink of water.
We see this a lot in the summer. People are busy, they’re running around, and they forget to drink. Then they wonder why they feel wiped out by 3 o’clock.
If you’re working in the yard, going for a run, or spending the afternoon at the park with the kids, you need to add to that baseline. Drink an extra glass before you head out. Take a bottle with you and sip every fifteen minutes or so. When you’re done, drink another glass to help your muscles recover. Your body will thank you.
The Signs You’re Not Drinking Enough
We want to give you a few things to watch for, because most people don’t connect these symptoms to dehydration until someone points it out.
Headaches are one of the most common signs. So is feeling foggy or having trouble concentrating. Dark yellow urine is a reliable indicator that you need more water. Muscle cramps, especially in the legs, often come down to dehydration too. And if you’re feeling irritable or anxious for no clear reason, a big glass of water might actually help more than you’d expect.
None of this is meant to scare you. We just want you to feel good this summer, and staying hydrated is one of the simplest ways to make that happen.
Making It Easier on Yourself
We know life gets busy. Between work, running errands, and keeping up with the kids, remembering to drink water can feel like one more thing on an already long list. And honestly, it’s even harder when you have to lug heavy cases of bottled water from the grocery store every week.
That’s why we do what we do. Having a 5-gallon water cooler in your kitchen or office changes the whole dynamic. When crisp, purified water is always right there and ready to pour, you just drink more of it. You don’t have to think about it. You fill your glass and go.
Our delivery drivers are out on the roads of Lubbock, Amarillo, Abilene, and Wichita Falls every week so you don’t have to worry about running out. We handle the heavy lifting. You handle the hydrating. That’s a pretty good deal, if we do say so ourselves.
Your body does a lot for you every single day. Give it the clean, refreshing water it needs to keep going strong. Keep a glass nearby, take a sip, and enjoy the rest of your summer.
